about my research

i am interested in way more topics than i have time to write articles on, but my research can be divided in two main broad areas

foundations of physics

one of my favourite works by far is this paper about the challlenge quantum mechanics poses to our causal reasoning abilities (read a summary in my blog)

  • Relating Wigner’s Friend scenarios to Nonclassical Causal Compatibility, Monogamy Relations, and Fine Tuning, Yìlè Yīng, Marina Maciel Ansanelli, Andrea Di Biagio, Elie Wolfe, Eric Gama Cavalcanti. 2309.12987 and Quantum 8

i am working on developing and refining Rovelli’s relational quantum mechanics, an intepretation of quantum mechanics based on the idea that variables obtain definite values only for the systems involved in interactions, and quantum interference phenomena are symptoms of this relationality.

is time orientation fundamental? is the difference between the past and the future a consequence of the dynamical laws relating facts at different times, or is it more of a contingent feature of our world?

  • The arrow of time in operational formulations of quantum theory, Andrea Di Biagio, Pietro Donà, Carlo Rovelli. 2010.05734 and Quantum 5
  • On the Time Orientation of Probabilistic Theories, Andrea Di Biagio, Carlo Rovelli. 2403.01062 and Philosophy of Physics 2

gravity and QFT

i started my PhD a just a year after the publication of the landmark papers by Bose et. al. and Marletto and Vedral pointing out that getting two masses entangled via gravity would be a test of quantum gravity, and the community frenetically arguing over the correct interpretations of this experiment and proposing alternative protocols

i co-authored part of the first fully relativistic analysis of the gravity mediated entanglement experiments

  • Locally mediated entanglement through gravity from first principles, Marios Christodoulou, Andrea Di Biagio, Markus Aspelmeyer, Časlav Brukner, Carlo Rovelli, Richard Howl. 2202.03368 and Physical Review Letters 130
  • Gravity Mediated Entanglement between Oscillators as Quantum Superposition of Geometries, Ofek Bengyat, Andrea Di Biagio, Markus Aspelmeyer, Marios Christodoulou. 2309.16312 and Physical Review D 110

i even proposed a couple of tests, one for testing quantum superpositions of the gravitational field via mass-energy equivalence and one to test a (quite ad-hoc) hypothesis about the discreteness of time

  • Truly relativistic gravity mediated entanglement protocol using superpositions of rotational energies, Gerard Higgins, Andrea Di Biagio, Marios Christodoulou. 2403.02062 and Physical Review D 110
  • An experiment to test the discreteness of time, Marios Christodoulou, Andrea Di Biagio, Pierre Martin-Dussaud. 2007.08431 and Quantum 6

but i am mostly interested in the conceptual questions around the experiments

  • Circuit locality from relativistic locality in scalar field mediated entanglement, Andrea Di Biagio, Richard Howl, Časlav Brukner, Carlo Rovelli, Marios Christodoulou. 2305.05645
  • Gravity entanglement, quantum reference systems, degrees of freedom, Marios Christodoulou, Andrea Di Biagio, Richard Howl, Carlo Rovelli. 2207.03138 and Classical and Quantum Gravity 40
  • Diagrams and GPTs for Quantum Gravity, Andrea Di Biagio. Quantum Views 8

this research even made me co-author on an experimental paper!

  • Photonic Implementation of Quantum Gravity Simulator, Emanuele Polino, Beatrice Polacchi, Davide Poderini, Iris Agresti, Gonzalo Carvacho, Fabio Sciarrino, Andrea Di Biagio, Carlo Rovelli, Marios Christodoulou. 2207.01680 and on the cover of Advanced Photonics Nexus 3
